Cleaning your Coffee Machine

Friday, April 18th, 2008

The start to great coffee is a clean espresso machine -however good the beans you have if the coffee handle and group heads contain the dreaded grease [ which quickly goes rancid ] its impossible to produce a decent cup.

The procedure is very simple -every night put the blank filter in one of the coffee handle’s, lock into the group head and press the button to make coffee. Run for a maximum of 10 seconds [ longer and you will burn out the valve] = repeat 6 times and once a week use the proper cleaning detergent.

Do not, as we have found some customers, use descaler - it has to be a detergent designed to dissolve the coffee grease .

In addition leave your coffee handle minus the filter basket in some warm water and detergent overnight - it will remove the black stain from the inside. Ensure only the metal part of the handle is soaking in the mixture as it can remove or fade the colour of any plastics.

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

The Cunill CT-1 espresso grinder is our most popular -a big seller because of its great features.

Now available in our shop these ex-rental grinders are fantastic value. A proper commercial coffee bean grinder it will give years of trouble free service.

Whilst it is adjustable grind is flexible its design makes it perfect for the production of espresso coffee. Able to grind several kilos of coffee a day it will dispense between 5 and 12grms per shot, up of course to you to decide but probably the most common size recommended for most brands of coffee is 7grms.

Which Coffee Machine For The Home

Presso Coffee Machine For Home?

So many choices -how do you know which machine to choose, such a differential in cost, if you want a good coffee is price the decider?

Well no its not. Major brand names make it easy but the long term cost are high if you consider pod machines. If you are a keen coffee consumer perhaps you will drink 4 cups a day- ground coffee 4p a shot, pod can be 15p+ so conservatively you may be paying 40-50p extra a day using pods or £180 per annum, the cost of a machine on its own.

A ground coffee machine makes an ok shot of espresso but they use a vibration pump. This averages 8 bar by alternating between 0 - 15 bar, the result is overextraction, the real reason why a cup of coffee at home is never as good as in a good cafe or restaurant.

A commercial machine use a rotary pump giving a constant pressure of 8-8.5 bar giving the perfect creamy espresso.

So is the answer to buy a commercial espresso machine ? I dont think so. Before the use of pumps we had lever machines, domestic ones can be as good as commercial but obviously can’t produce the same volume!

Have a look at these machines- they can be cool and stand out from the crowd- one of my favorites is the presso - great price and an excellent cup of espresso.

A much better solution than using pods- and so much cheaper!
